Our purpose: Empowering tomorrow
We enable our clients to succeed by navigating their most complex legal challenges and creating opportunity where others see barriers. We seek to create a better future for our clients, our people and the communities in which we live and work.
Our values
We are committed to delivering exceptional experiences for both our people and our clients, and this is what makes working with Freshfields unique. This difference is shaped by our three core values. These are what drive our success and are at the heart of how we approach our work and relationships.
Embracing challenge
We seize challenges as opportunities to grow. We share a common mindset that, working together as one team, we can overcome obstacles and deliver great outcomes. It is why people join us and clients choose us.
Valuing collaboration
We offer an unparalleled service and experience through our collegiality and by proactively bringing together our global and diverse talent. It is what unlocks our full potential.
Redefining excellence
We seek to push the boundaries of what excellence means in everything we do. It is a journey not a destination and one we support each other on. It is what gives us our cutting edge.
Responsible business
The way we do business at Freshfields reflects who we are and what we stand for. We seek to make a real and positive difference in the world around us.
Our approach to responsible business focuses on our commitment to ethical and responsible working practices, including our environmental impact and becoming a more diverse and inclusive workplace; making a positive contribution to the communities in which we work, especially through our pro bono work, volunteering and community investment activities; and supporting our clients in the transition to a sustainable future through our client sustainability work.
Diversity & Inclusion
Our D&I commitments are designed to support the targets and focus on the central importance of diversity and inclusion to our people and our business, and are driven by leadership, accountability and data.
We launched new five-year global commitments to diversity and inclusion and targets for gender, race and ethnicity, and LGBTQ+ representation reflecting a refreshed focus across the firm on action and progress in this area. The firm will also have location-specific race and ethnicity goals.
Pro Bono
We provide legal services in the public interest without charge to a wide range of clients, from individual asylum seekers to some of the world’s biggest charities. We believe everyone should have effective access to their legal rights, and focus our effort on promoting access to these rights for demographics that include women, children, LGBTQ+ people, trafficking survivors and refugees.
Our aim is to have the greatest possible impact on access to justice and access to opportunity, through deep relationships with our ongoing pro bono clients and by proactively supporting them in addressing systemic issues. Our pro bono clients are clients of the firm: we don’t distinguish internally between paid and pro bono work, and often bring together cross-border, cross-practice teams as needed.
Sustainability
Freshfields is deeply committed to sustainability. We recently announced our new five-year environment strategy, building on the strong progress our firm has made in meeting targets we set in 2016. We have committed to purchasing 100% renewable electricity by 2030; reducing carbon from business travel by 30%, reducing paper usage by 40%, and phasing out single-use plastics in all Freshfields offices by the end of 2021.
Our new strategy follows over a decade of industry-leading environmental initiatives. These include becoming carbon neutral in 2007; setting up the award-winning 10 year ‘Reforestation in East Africa Program’ (REAP) carbon offsetting scheme; signing the ‘Green Pledge,’ an initiative led by the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations that seeks to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of arbitrations; and, most recently, joining RE100, a global initiative that brings together businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity.
